Lingual techniqueLingual technique is the most known as well as the most effective treatment modality of invisible orthodontics. Principally this is a fixed brace-technique, in which the brace is bonded to the tongue-side of teeth (with other words the lingual side of teeth – that is why it is called lingual technique). Due to this fact the hidden position of the fixed braces ensure complete invisibility. The basic mechanics of this technique is similar to the outer braces, so fixed individual braces are glued to teeth and these braces are connected by orthodontic wires. During the treatment these wires will align teeth and from dental arches, as well as the doctor will move teeth to certain directions. The technique has developed very much since it has started in the late 80s. The pioneers used simple outer braces for lingual applications and later specific lingual braces were designed for this different morphology of teeth. Nowadays, lingual orthodontics defines a subspecialty within orthodontics, and companies provide specific appliances wires and auxiliaries for lingual orthodontists. Also specific lingual laboratories provide services for the lingual brace programming. There are different schools and treatment philosophies in lingual orthodontics, which developed in recent years. Until today this technique developed so much, that we can state that lingual orthodontics can provide solutions for any orthodontic task, so any case can be treated with this technique, what would be treated with outer braces. There are some new developments in lingual orthodontics. Braces got smaller, flatter, so the patient acceptance and comfort increased significantly, even media persons and actors can wear lingual braces without interfering with their speech ability. The most known new braces are the Incognito and the STb braces. In general we can state that since this technique has specific characteristics, the successful treatment with lingual braces requires a specific education and experience. This specific education need, as well as the technical and laboratory challenges results in the fact that the number of experienced lingual orthodontists is limited. These circumstances, as well as the required time for the adjustment of braces in the office led to the fact that lingual orthodontics is a kind of a premium treatment in contemporary orthodontics.
