Modern orthodontics

Although orthodontics is the oldest specialty of dentistry, in the recent years this specialty faced to several challenges, what anyhow changed the science, introducing some new developmental directions.

In general speaking these new developments can be categorized on the following way:

• • New techniques, new appliances – with the technological development there are new appliances (e.g. invisible braces, or the Damon self-ligation technique).
• • New standards in costumer care – So much developed information sources are available, in addition to this the involvement of the patient in the decision-making process is a must in contemporary orthodontics
• • New paradigm in treatment planning – In treatment planning the science pays more attention to the soft tissue and to the facial and smile aesthetics, than it was in the past.

Besides the fields mentioned above there is another new field of development in orthodontics. (what eventually qualifies the whole medicine and dentistry in general) This is called interdisciplinary (TEAM) cooperation. In many cases in order to achieve maximum aesthetics and function we as a member of one sub-specialty have to cooperate with other specialists. This communication and teamwork has great opportunity and future.
